Yatis graduated from the Law School of the Australian National University in 1991. He completed the Australian National University’s Legal Workshop course in 1991 to gain admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory and as a Barrister of the High Court of Australia. While at the Legal Workshop, he was appointed to tutor final year law students of the Australian National University’s Law School in Commonwealth Constitutional Law, a subject dealing with the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia. After completing his course at the Legal Workshop, he returned to Malaysia and carried out his period of pupillage with Aris Rizal Christopher Fernando & Co and Azman Davidson & Co to gain admission as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Malaysian Bar. In the second half of 1992, he was awarded a Guinness Plc. - University of Leeds - Foreign and Commonwealth Office Scholarship to complete a Master of Arts degree in Modern International Studies at the University of Leeds.

 

After completing this degree, he returned to Malaysia, was admitted to the Malaysian Bar, and joined Azman Davidson & Co. as a legal assistant in October 1993. He was made a salaried partner in Azman Davidson & Co. in 1999, and subsequently a full equity partner in 2001. In 2004, he took a leave of absence of one year from Azman Davidson & Co. to complete a Master of Laws degree in the Faculty of Law of the University of Auckland.

 

He left Azman Davidson & Co in July 2021 and set up Yatiswara, Ng & Chan with Karen Ng and Kenny Chan in August 2021. He is currently Yatiswara, Ng & Chan’s Managing Partner.

Noteworthy

  • Acted as part of a team of lawyers to pursue damages claims for apartment owners arising out of a landslide that destroyed an apartment block and killed 48 people.

  • Acted as part of a team of lawyers in arbitration and court proceedings for a tunnelling contractor against its employer in a major storm water tunnel project.

  • Represented an earthworks contractor in a Commission of Inquiry investigating the causes of a landslide on a construction site in Penang that resulted in the deaths of a number of people working on the site.

  • Acted for a Joint Venture entity in adjudication proceedings against the Government of Malaysia in respect of claims concerning unforeseeable geological conditions encountered in a water transfer tunnel project.
